When a new member is to be added to the household in the form of a baby, the parents are most likely to be more apprehensive than excited. This apprehension is all the more compounded for first time parents who have a lot of unanswered questions. As new parents, you might be making a list of things you would be needing to welcome the baby into a safe and comfortable world. Aside from the obvious necessities such as a bottle or diapers, there are less known things that can ease your way into parenthood and important in keeping the baby comfortable and in good health. The baby pillow is one such item which is often given less importance than other more obvious items.
More often than not, baby pillows are sold along with the crib for the baby as a set, with bedding etc, which might not be suitable for children below two years of age as proper care is not taken in manufacturing such packaged items. In general, it’s best to wait until your child moves from a crib to the bed before introducing a pillow.
Having said that, if a blocked nose is keeping your baby up during nights, one way to help it through this is to elevate the baby’s head while sleeping, gravity helps in draining sinus. Now, that’s not the only way to drain sinus but it is one. This can also be achieved without a pillow though as there are various other methods as well.
Here are some things to look for in a baby pillow. A small and lightweight pillow is best for a young child. This is so that it can not suffocate the child or make him or her too hot. Yet another thing to look for is that the pillow should be devoid of frills and fancies. This way, the baby cannot choke on anything attached to the pillow. Cotton and silk pillows are two perfect examples of baby friendly fabrics. It is best to stay away from things like feather pillows, as they could cause an unexpected allergic reaction in some babies and its best not to find out. The best possible options are those baby pillows that have a removable cover, or are machine washable as a whole as this will help keep the pillows clean.
Test the firmness before buying a baby pillow so that the baby will not be smothered by sinking his or her little nose into it. It is safe to teach a baby to sleep on a baby pillow after it becomes two years old. Before the age of two babies can get suffocated on a pillow. It may be dangerous to use a baby pillow before the age of two because the baby may be suffocated by the pillow. A non allergic body pillow is not a bad alternative either. The possibilities for your baby pillow are endless.

However, there are many good reasons to hold off on giving your little one a baby pillow.
It is only realistic to be concerned about nighttime safety. Research has shown that having extra items in a crib, including stuffed animals, blankets, or a baby pillow, increases the risk of suffocation. Risk factors for SIDS should not be taken lightly by caregivers. Older babies who can move around well and even walk are still at risk of suffocation while sleeping, because they are not as aware of their surroundings.

Baby pillows are not to be kept in a crib or given to young infants under 1 years old. Baby pillows are not recommended by doctors for infants or to be put into their cribs. Pillows of any kind can put an infant at risk if left in the crib.
Your baby can take a nap with one of these baby pillows or sleep with one at night. Toddlers like to take them on trips in the car.

and also quite a bit more comfy. Generally, doctors say that at the age of 12 months, when a child has gained some mobility, it may be time to give them a baby pillow. While you can wait several years to give your child a pillow if you choose, giving him or her one earlier on is a great way to have your one year old (or older) baby sleep through the night. Why? Because an appropriately sized and shaped baby pillow can really help a baby to be more comfortable, and also help them to breathe more easily during the night.

Toddlers and older infants are more comfortable with a baby pillow than they are without.
