Cozy Comfort With Baby Pillows

One of the primary concerns of any parent is to provide the finest for their toddlers. As a well meaning parent, you go the extra mile to meet the needs of your child. With babies this implies taking care of their every need, and supporting them at every step. The truth is that, getting enough sleep is critical and is a primary need for your child. Have you dwelled on how a restful sleep your baby is getting? If despite all efforts from your end to ensure quality rest, your child seems restive and edgy, help is near! It is at this point that baby pillows, often misunderstood, prove to be a blessing. It is generally accepted that baby pillows are best used after the age of two. Research even shows that using baby pillows before the age of two can be quite harmful. However, as with adults, the need to use a pillow is a personal choice, and even for a baby this must be ascertained based on his or her individual needs. Thus, when your baby shows signs that he is ready to use a baby pillow you may want to opt for a well designed pillow made of baby suitable material.

One point to consider is that adult pillows are a strict no no with kids, and it is imperative that one chooses pillows specifically designed for babies. From the size and thickness of the pillow to the texture of the material, baby pillows need to be selected with due care. Look for a sturdy fabric, and ensure that the foam is not soft but firm. Feather pillows are not ideal for babies, so choose pillows made of hypo allergenic materials. Make sure they are easily machine washable for all those unexpected little accidents! Extra frills on baby pillows may make them pretty, but this is as good as asking for trouble. Additional ribbons and laces on baby pillows are unnecessary and may increase the chances of suffocation.

Finally, while the chief benefit of using good quality baby pillows is certainly a night of unruffled shut eye, the advantages do not end there. Used the right way, baby pillows reduce the chances of your child developing flat head syndrome or Plagiocephaly. The solid support offered by the unyielding foam in a good quality baby pillow distributes equal pressure to the head of baby from all sides, thus preventing a flat head. Some scientists even purport that baby pillows may bring down the risk of SIDS, a chief cause of infant death in the United States. So are baby pillows the true child care boon? Do you doubt that!

He was right. And here my latest worry is the topic of the baby pillow.

A little baby pillow is often sold in crib sets. This is misleading. Pillows are not recommended for children under the age of 2.

Your child may sleep much more comfortably with a pillow. But just as babies are not like adults, baby pillows are not like adult pillows. How can you know you have selected the right kind of pillow for your child?

First, is your child old enough to use a baby pillow? Children under two years old should never have pillows in the crib with them. Because infants’ neck muscles are weak, they run the risk of suffocating on the pillow if they roll onto their belly. Some parents find that elevating their baby’s head when their baby has a stuffed nose or an ear infection helps the baby to sleep, but this is dangerous.
