Great baby stuff

It is natural that you will want to lavish the new baby that you have been expecting for many months, with all kinds of cute and cuddly gifts, to welcome your baby home. You literally have an endless selection available to you, in a wide variety of stores. There are cute and cuddly stuffed animals, and of course you just have to get them their very own baby pillow to put in the baby bed with them. You are assuming it is ok to buy several of these items, because they are being sold in many of the stores you have been shopping in, right? This is most definitely NOT the case. Not only is doing such a thing not ok, it can be very dangerous, and can even be fatal to put a stuffed animal or baby pillow in the same bed with your newborn or infant baby. The use of baby pillows or stuffed animals can end up being deadly, even if your adorable baby sleeps in a bassinet or baby bed or his own.

A variety of things are used in the making of these pillows, and any one of them could be harmful for your baby. Every newborn baby has skin that is extremely sensitive. The dyes and fabrics that are used to make a baby pillow can not only irritate your baby’s skin, but they can many times also cause mild or extreme allergic reactions.

When many parents think of the comfort of their bundle of joy, they are only trying to be helpful when they buy a baby pillow. The best thing that you can do to be helpful to your new baby, is to educate yourself on the variety of safety issues that can mean the difference of life and death when it comes to the well being of your baby. To put it simply, there are far too many risks that outweigh any good that can come from putting a pillow close to your baby until they have reached two years old. Some toddlers are not ready for a baby pillow even when they reach the age of two. It is advised by many researchers, that until a child reaches the age of two years old, and they have outgrown the need for a baby bed, you should not use pillows.

Most new moms already know that the youngest of infants do not need a baby pillow. Quilts and pillows can often be dangerous for newborns and small infants, and should only be used under a parent’s direct supervision. But in the desire to keep their baby safe, many moms avoid giving their child a baby pillow for longer than is really necessary.

When a baby is old enough, he or she will be safe using a baby pillow… and also quite a bit more comfy. Generally, doctors say that at the age of 12 months, when a child has gained some mobility, it may be time to give them a baby pillow. Though when to give your child a pillow is your choice, and many mothers wait several years, the truth is that giving one to your 12 month old (or older) child may really help him or her to sleep through the night. The right size and shape baby pillow can do a lot for your child’s comfort, as well as helping him or her breathe better during cold and flu season.

A Baby Pillow for an Older Infant

Toddlers and older infants are more comfortable with a baby pillow than they are without. But even if the pediatrician has given you a green light to give your child a baby pillow, that does not mean that any type of pillow is a good choice. It is always important to think about your child’s safety, of course, and grown up sized pillows can pose a danger to your toddler. Because even if your 1 to 4 year old gets around well, there is still a risk of him or her being smothered by a larger pillow.

So of course shopping for the right type of baby pillow for your baby is very important. In addition to being somewhat dangerous, adult sized pillows are just not comfortable for a toddler. A baby pillow, though, is perfectly proportioned to a young child’s head and neck. With toddler sized dimensions, only twelve inches by sixteen inches, a baby pillow supports your child in just the same way an adult pillow supports an adult, but geared towards the angles and dimensions which are comfortable for a baby.

There are also a few additional considerations to make when you are looking into buying a baby pillow for your child. For one, it is a good idea to choose a baby pillow that is hypoallergenic. A hypoallergenic pillow will reduce the amount of allergens your child is exposed to as he or she sleeps, and will usually be of the highest quality. In addition, you should also look into buying a baby pillow with an easy to clean fabric. While a plastic coated baby pillow is easiest, it might make your child’s head and neck feel overly warm. Your best choice is a pillow with a high quality, long lasting fabric that is breathable, but easily wipes clean .

Many baby pillows with various types of design and decoration are available at stores and craft shows. These lovely creations are tempting for new parents or someone shopping for a unique baby gift to purchase. Before doing so, the safety of a baby pillow should be considered. Before anyone decides to use a baby pillow in the crib with a small baby, there is some frightening information that should be known.

SIDS, or Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, is said to be the leading killer of babies between the ages of one to twelve months in the United States. In the early 90s, based on reports out of Europe and Australia, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) released a recommendation that babies not be placed on their tummies for sleep. In 1994, the Back To Sleep campaign was initiated as a joint effort by several national agencies and consumer groups. Following this, various studies and surveys were conducted to evaluate the relevance of this change on the occurrence of SIDS. These studies showed the rate of SIDS decreased by 50%, but other related factors were also discovered. In 2005, an AAP task force released a new statement, which included several recommendations. Primarily, the non prone position was changed to a recommendation of a back only position. The statement also recommended that the only items to put in the crib with the baby should be a firm mattress and fitted sheet. A bumper pad, if used, must be firm and snugly fitted. There should be no baby pillow, stuffed toys, etc. in the crib with the infant. To address the findings of increased flat head sydrome, the AAP recommended other preventive measures. Positioning other than on the back or use of a baby pillow were not deemed worth the risk of SIDS by the AAP.

There is a baby pillow on the market, called Baby Sleep Positioner, which includes the recommendations for SIDS prevention in its advertising. Made of foam, the purpose of this baby pillow is to support the head while keeping the baby positioned on the back. The AAP is careful to state it does not endorse any products for use in the crib other than those it lists. If parents are considering the use of the foam baby pillow sleep positioner, checking with their Pediatrician first is probably the safest approach.
