Baby Pillows are used to assist newborn and toddlers get a comfortable sleep. Recent advancement in technology has seen manufacturers provide ample safety measures to prevent SIDS, a sudden and unexplained demise of a child between one month and one year old. The new pillows not only provide a greater safety measure but also help a child develop a proper round skulls formation.
Most pillows come in cotton and polyester blend to provide a soft and washable quality to these pillows. Popular among these are the one’s recommended by the American Society of Pediatricians. General practitioners and Pediatricians caution against the use of baby pillow for a baby less than one month. Still, it is a good idea to consult a Pediatrician before deciding on the best time to use a pillow. Responding to the high demands of baby pillows, manufacturers are now providing custom built pillows on many children accessories ranging from cribs to child seats. Anti allergic pillows and therapeutic pillows are prime examples of recent advancement in technology. Whatever the case, just make sure that the baby pillow you select provide a natural alignment of the spine so that your baby can enjoy a good nights sleep.

Toddlers may prefer to hug a pillow because it is soft and springy. The cuddly feeling when hugging a pillow may help a toddler feel more secure when a caregiver is not around. Toddlers do not use pillows only for resting their heads but may sleep with their entire body on it or curl up with a pillow. Toddlers may grab any pillow they see and curl up with it to sleep.
Doctors do not recommend using a pillow for a baby.

Some experts say that it is better to wait until the second birthday, due to recent research. Of course, there is no harm in waiting longer if you want to do so. There really is not an age at which it becomes necessary to give your toddler a baby pillow. It may even be counterproductive for children who lie on their backs while sleeping. Using a baby pillow too early can lead to stiff and sore muscles, because it causes the spine to curve.

This has the potential to cause a painful accident. To help avoid bumps and bruises or even a trip to the emergency room, do not give your child a baby pillow before the transition to a toddler bed.
Many pediatricians cite eighteen months as the minimum age that an infant should use a baby pillow. Some experts say that it is better to wait until the second birthday, due to recent research. Of course, there is no harm in waiting longer if you want to do so.

Another leading cause of SIDS is rebreathing. Medically speaking it is when the baby breathes carbon dioxide or bad air, as what it is more commonly known. Rebreathing happens when the baby, instead of breathing oxygen, inhales the carbon dioxide he has exhaled. When you leave the baby in his crib, the loose sheets or beddings may get over his head, causing rebreathing. Many do not realize that rebreathing may also be caused by baby pillow.
