The Internet is full of horrific stories of how babies have suffocated to death because of using baby pillows. I think most of such stories are overstated. I have a two year old daughter myself and have been using baby pillows for her right from the age of one and a half without any problems. Yes there are some precautions which you have to take. Firstly, never go in for cheap products, they are most likely to compromise on quality to keep their prices down. A little bit of market survey through the WalMart, Woolworth and Baby care shops is necessary to get a sense of what best is available. A little bit of research on the Internet also helps. A nice narrow, firm baby pillow is just as good as the latest memory foam pillows. In my opinion, a memory foam pillow though a bit costly is a better buy. The memory foam pillow does really mold to the shape of the baby’s head. I say this out of experience of seeing my baby sleep soundly without once bringing out the late night feed ever since she started sleeping on a memory foam pillow.
There are other advantages to using a baby pillow. According to some doctors, having a pillow, raises the baby’s head slightly above the rest of the body and makes breathing easier especially when the baby is suffering from a cold. They also say that a firm support prevents cranial deformity which may occur if the baby sleeps with head to one side for too long. Make sure you check the pillow cover. Just make sure you buy the softest, linen cotton material for a pillow cover. That will prevent rashes or allergic reaction which is possible if you use synthetic material. Don’t buy soft or feather pillows, they are the ones responsible for the negative publicity. I would recommend that with these common sense tips, using baby pillows is not a liability but an advantage for every parent and the baby of course.

There are varying outlooks on the safety or utility of using pillows for your baby. Most of such advice is needlessly exaggerated and do not give the right picture of whether to use baby pillows or not. It is a fact that children less than one year of age do not usually need pillows and in some cases, the pillows may not be safe for his/her health. But after about a year, using the right baby pillow actually helps your baby sleep soundly.
During the early years, the skull bones are very soft and keeping the head in one position may result in the skull developing a lopsided appearance.

This is why you may also want to use a sleep positioner in addition to a baby pillow. Sleep positioners are designed to keep babies sleeping on their back in the safest possible position. Along with the baby pillow, these sleep positioners help ensure that the baby is able to get a good night’s rest.
Many in the medical community are of the opinion that the use of a baby pillow is not necessarily in the child’s best interests. While some children seem to do fine without them, many will need a baby pillow in order to sleep more comfortably through the night.

One of them is the baby pillow which is more or less ignored as a separate purchase.
More often than not, baby pillows are sold along with the crib for the baby as a set, with bedding etc, which might not be suitable for children below two years of age as proper care is not taken in manufacturing such packaged items. It is advised by experts that it is prudent to be patient until the baby is grown up enough to sleep on a bed instead of the crib, when it comes to introducing pillows.
Having said that, if a blocked nose is keeping your baby up during nights, one way to help it through this is to elevate the baby’s head while sleeping, gravity helps in draining sinus. Now, that’s not the only way to drain sinus but it is one.

Others prefer sleeping on their tummies. A bad quality pillow can even cause neck injuries. Thus a baby head pillow is not just any other pillow. It is a specially designed pillow for babies which caters for all eventualities and are specifically risk free. Always buy good branded pillows which may be a bit costly but are safe and of a good quality.

The use of a baby sleep pillow for babies under the age of two is not recommended by doctors. When a baby is sleeping in a crib and rolls over onto the pillow, the baby may not be able to push itself up off the pillow or roll off the pillow. Suffocation can result if a baby rolls over face down onto a pillow and cannot remove themself from the pillow. A baby sleep pillow should not be used until a child is ready to sleep in a bed.
For children over the age of two, a baby sleep pillow is a wonderful item.

I really like the pillows for the bassinette which are positioned on both side of the baby while they sleep. These types of baby pillows position baby so that he or she is flat on their back, which is what is recommended. These are great baby pillows, but there is a new version that I think is even better. The new version of this pillow has memory foam which will mold to the shape of baby’s head, making it mold to the pillow The memory foam will help to prevent a flat area from forming on baby’s head. This baby pillow will also prevent baby from rolling around, helping to promote a peaceful night’s sleep because baby is in the same spot all night.
